Things.

The half marathon training has officially begun. On the first day, the cold wind was making my eyes water, and then the tears froze on my face. So you could say things are going well so far. The schedule, for those of you who want to play along at home:

If any seasoned runners have advice or suggestions to share, please let me know. Last time around, my goals were twofold:

1. Don't die.
2. Don't come in last.

This year, I want a finish time of 2:00:00. I'm pretty good at endurance over long distances, so speed is the main issue that I need to work on. Anyway, we'll see how that goes.

My training might get temporarily derailed this weekend, though, as I'm going to North Carolina to see The Whitleys and meet baby Annabelle.

I was talking to Allison earlier, graciously offering to help with some things while I was there, and she acknowledged that she would "put me to work". She further explained that to mean keeping Emaline entertained. I don't think she understands what "work" is, because I'm pretty sure it doesn't normally include playing dress-ups and having a 4-year-old draw pictures of you and give you hugs. Challenge accepted.

I'm going to stick my finger in her dimple.

  3. Hoo-ray for winter running! I haven't run outside since Christmas, but I'll be out this weekend. I got these awesome brooks gloves that I wear under mittens to keep my hands warm. But I still cry....

I'm curious to know how your training program differs from last time. Shorter training period? More long runs?

  4. GAH! I'm coming to NYC this weekend, ALONE, and wanted to meet up tomorrow for brunch, dinner or on Sunday for something. But, how exciting for you to meet your new niece. We'll get together one of these times. (PS. You could also come down here...)

  5. Thanks for doing the dirty work and me giving this schedule. I don't know why I'm so lazy and didn't look one up myself.

  8. i don't know if i'm a "seasoned" runner, or even a runner, but i do run. there are two things that have increased my speed (over the same distance that i was running anyway). i looked them up for triathlon running training but they really have nothing to do with triathlons. first is a tempo run - you run about a minute faster pace than you were running and sustain that for as long as you can. then as you practice, you increase the time you run that pace, or the speed. you just get used to running faster. i was at like a 9:30 minute mile comfortably, now i can run an 8 minute mile and it doesn't seem too much.

the other thing that is supposed to help is doing hill sprints. i'm not sure if this is supposed to help speed, or endurance, or what, but at the very least after sprinting up a hill a bunch of times running on flat ground is cake. either find a steep hill or get on a treadmill and set the incline high, and then sprint for 30-40 seconds with like one minute of recovery. then repeat ad nauseam. haha just kidding, stop before you have to throw up. it's harder than you think, i planned on doing about 20 repeats my first time. i did 10 and was exhausted.

    so, there's my novel.
